How Texas Microchip Dog Ended Up on Colorado Highway Revealed

Three years ago, a dog named Bear went missing from his backyard in Texas. His travels thereafter took him to Colorado and a new family.

WESTMINSTER, Colorado. The Rottweiler formerly known as Bear definitely has reason to smile now that he is reunited with his family after being found running on US 36 near Westminster on Thursday.

But in a twist worthy of a Hollywood movie, this family is not what the authorities originally thought.

Three years ago, the Bear was in his yard when his owner said that he thought someone had taken his dog, although it turned out that the Bear could have simply escaped. The same dog was rescued from traffic on US 36 on Thursday. A microchip scan showed that the puppy came from Texas. When the owner from Texas got a call saying that Bear had been found in Colorado and was in good shape, he was ecstatic.

However, according to Connie Howard, executive director of the Foothills Animal Shelter, there is more to this story and the dog’s journey.

It turns out that after Bear went missing from his Texas backyard, he was picked up as a homeless man and taken to a shelter in Pecos, Texas. The couple adopted him and gave him a new name. This was in 2020. The couple later moved to Colorado.

Apparently, the dog formerly known as Bear has a streak of escapism, which is why he ended up on Highway 36 on Thursday morning.

“I saw this dog run across the highway, and I slammed on the brakes, stopped, opened the door, whistled and tried to get him into the car,” said Jessica Misegadis, who drives the highway every day to get to and from work.

She said she was in the right place at the right time. “I honked so people would look around and wonder why I turned on the emergency lights because it was crazy traffic and cars were flying past,” she said.

Misegadis said that Bear was frightened and did not see any aggression.

“He was the sweetest and you could just say he was a good boy,” she said.

She drove it straight to the police station with the idea that if it was hers, she hoped someone would do the right thing and check if it was chipped.

That’s when the animal control officer scanned the dog and found it missing from Texas.

“We called the owner and he was delighted and looking forward to the reunion of his dog Bear,” said the WPD sergeant. Ray Esslinger. “We agreed on a reunion between dog and [his Texas owner] with the Foothills Animal Shelter – we took Bear there because we don’t keep dogs overnight at the police station.

Shortly thereafter, the dog’s current family discovered that he was missing and contacted the shelter. They presented their adoption papers and took home a pet.

According to Howard, Bear’s former owner was sad but understanding.

Misegadis admitted that she has some connection with the dog, although they were together for only a short time. “Just circumstances or whatever, it was a home run—he needed help and I was there,” Misegadis said.
