Hey Joe! Dog for cat lovers | forgotten friends

Joe has been in a shelter for over five years after being found homeless in Wilson County during Hurricane Harvey.

SAN ANTONIO – Our Forgotten Friends series tells each week about a dog or cat that has spent a long time at the local shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week we went to the Animal Welfare League on Nacogdoches and met the perfect dog for cat lovers, Joe. He has been with the ADL for more than five years since he was found homeless in Wilson County in October 2017 after Hurricane Harvey.

Joe was taken from a shelter as a puppy three years earlier, but like all ADL adopted pets, they always take the animal back if necessary. They didn’t really have room for Joe when he first arrived, but they put him to work until he could get his own kennel.

Joe is a 9 year old collie mix with a gorgeous brindle coat.

He gets along very well with other dogs he meets and loves to play with puppies. Although Joe is not a big fan of cats… well, maybe he is because he enjoys chasing them.

Jamie Gibson, director of life-saving initiatives at the Animal Welfare League, said Joe is essentially a cat in a dog’s body. She told us that these long-lived dogs are near and dear to her heart because she spends so much time getting to know them. She remembers when Joe first arrived.

“He was terrified and didn’t trust anyone,” Jamie said. But that changed a few days after he got to know people.

“Joe always likes to do what he wants, on his own terms and always, and he loves routine,” Jamie said. “His ideal day would consist of a meal followed by a short nap in the sun. Maybe a short walk, also known as a “sniffary” so he can stop and sniff everything that’s coming, and then another nap inside with the air conditioner on.”

It is important for Joe to feel independent, and he will let you know when he wants your attention. Otherwise, like most cats, just leave him alone to do his own thing on his own terms. He just wants to cool off.

Joe loves to cuddle and loves treats. “He’s very motivated by treats,” Jamie said. He is also very good on a leash if you remember he wants to sniff EVERYTHING!

“Joe is ready for a loving home and he truly deserves one after being in the shelter for so long,” Jamie said.
