Georgia Detention Officer Arrested After Allegedly Beating Prisoner

A Georgia detention officer was fired and arrested on multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a prisoner, officials said.

Reynard Trotman faces multiple charges, including seven counts of breach of oath by a government official, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of battery, reckless conduct, mistreatment of a prisoner, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office announced that Trotman was arrested on Thursday. In a press release, he is charged with “aiding and abetting the commission of a crime and failing to assist or protect a prisoner from physical harm.”

Sheriff Patrick Labat told WXIA that an investigation was launched after a detainee at the Fulton County Jail was found to have lacerations and stab wounds. The prisoner survived the injuries, but their condition forced officials to check the CCTV footage.

Several other detainees who attacked the prisoner will also be charged, Labat said.

“The actions of this detention officer do not reflect the mission of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office,” Labat said in a statement. “Any officer who violates his oath not only discredits himself, but also exacerbates the serious personnel problems that law enforcement agencies across the country are working to solve. As the Fulton County Sheriff, I am committed to transparency and keeping every officer responsible for protecting and serving every member of our community, including those under our care.”

The accusations against Trotman led to his dismissal. He’s been with the sheriff’s office since July.

“Being an arrest officer is an incredibly difficult job, but there is no excuse for the behavior that led to this arrest,” the sheriff continued in a statement. “The actions of this one person are certainly not a reflection of the men and women of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office who come to work every day and carry out their duties with professionalism, respect and integrity.”
