The vet told him they knew someone who ran a charity that could help raise money. Oesthoff was told that the charity is run by Anthony Devolder, a pseudonym Santos allegedly used for years before entering politics in 2020.

Osthoff and another veteran, a retired police sergeant. Michael Ball, who tried to intervene to help Osthoff in 2016, said that the GoFundMe page that raised the necessary funds for the dog’s operation was taken down by Santos and that the current congressman disappeared with the money.

Santos allegedly stated that the dog’s illness was incurable after consulting an affiliated veterinarian and that the money would instead go to his charity. Osthoff called for permission to transfer funds to other clinics, but Santos allegedly stopped responding.

Text messages allegedly sent between Oosthoff and Santos that were received by Patch.com reveal a denied request for funds elsewhere.

The dog died on January 15, 2017, but Osthoff could not afford euthanasia and cremation because he had been out of work for over a year with a broken leg. Osthoff said that he had to beg to find money for Sapphire’s euthanasia and cremation.

The Friends of Pets United charity founded by Santos is not listed in official records as a charity, according to The New York Times, which also reported that a 2017 fundraiser beneficiary with ties to the group said they did not receive the money. .

It comes after reports exposed Santos in lies about part of his past during his 2022 campaign in which he defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman. Santos fabricated, among other things, his work, educational history, and connections to the alleged Ponzi scheme.

Santos was urged to resign by some Republican and Democratic members of Congress, as well as numerous New York State Republicans. He said he would resign if the 142,000 people who voted for him asked him to do so.

On Tuesday, Santos was named to two committees – on small business and science, and space and technology – by the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives.
