Gavin Newsom’s wife pushed for government funding to benefit her own nonprofit

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, has pushed for public funding to benefit her own nonprofit.

Sibel Newsom is credited as the driving force behind the $4.7 billion mental health funding her husband championed last year. The initiative included hiring 10,000 school counselors.

Meanwhile, Sibel Newsom founded The Representation Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to mental health issues. The group licenses films and educational programs about gender justice to thousands of public schools in every state and has earned at least $1.5 million in fee income since 2012.

But in California, billions in mental health funding will also create more demand for the nonprofit Siebel Newsom, ultimately boosting its bottom line. Loretta Whitson, director of the California School Counselors Association, which represents 3,000 public school counselors, acknowledged this after the investment.

“While the Governor’s recent investment will add additional school counselors to the workforce, the need for access to films and curriculum support materials, such as the Sibel Newsom documentary series, will increase even more,” Whitson told EdSource in November. “(We) would love to work with her and support her efforts.”

Siebel Newsom’s influence in the Golden State expanded after Governor Newsom created the First Partner Office in 2019, which has nine employees and nearly $5 million in funding. From this office, Sibel Newsom is able to advance his political agenda with taxpayer funds.

The first partner also works on children’s mental health through the Performance Project, which she launched in 2012 to combat “sexism through film education, research and activism.” She writes and directs films about gender identity produced by her commercial organization Girls Club Entertainment. The public schools then license the films to her non-profit organization, paying between $49 and $599.

Sibel Newsom’s films, including Miss Representation, The Mask You Live In, The Great American Lie, and Fair Game, sometimes contain sexually explicit imagery and at some points make students feel “shame and sadness” at about the Americans. society is split into privilege and oppression, Fox News Digital previously reported.

Several Sibel Newsom films also promote her husband. The curriculum that accompanies the films encourages students to become politically and socially active, including encouraging students to gather friends and vote for politicians who support a “caring economy” that “accepts universal human values.”

The Newsoms can see their legalized pay-to-play scheme as a virtuous circle,” said Open The Books founder Adam Andrzejewski, whose watchdog group closely monitored Sibel Newsom’s non-profit activities and shared their findings with Fox News Digital. “Actually, it is a model. of endless mutual benefit for friends and members of Newsom, Inc. This is what taxpayers pay for. This is a closed system. Newsoms create problems, “solve” them, and cash checks along the way.”

Gov. Newsom said the COVID-19 pandemic added to the stress on children as he unveiled billions for mental health initiatives. Its policies in response to the pandemic, including lockdown measures, have been among the strictest in the country. In May 2021, only half of California’s schools were open to in-person learning.

“Our investigation shows that Sibel Newsom can lay the groundwork for her social and political agenda in the classroom and then put on the hat as a first partner to advocate for and implement tough political change,” Andrzejewski continued. “As the winnings pile up for the governor, they pile up for the nonprofit Sibel Newsom, her production house, and even special interest groups like the California Association of School Counselors.”

The representative project was previously under scrutiny after the Sacramento Bee reported that several of its publicly disclosed donors were also trying to influence Governor Newsom.

The non-profit organization Siebel Newsom also recently operated in the state without qualifying. While it’s not clear exactly when the non-profit organization became overdue, the almost year-old rejected application in the state’s charity database was the last to appear on Jan. 11.

Overdue nonprofits cannot operate or solicit funds as their reputation remains unsatisfactory. However, Project Representation has continued to move forward since the annual application was rejected and throughout 2022, including hosting lavish fundraising events, as Fox News Digital previously reported.

But on January 12, the day Fox News Digital released its initial report, The Representation Project tried to file paperwork with the Attorney General’s office, which was processed immediately and returned the group to good standing, a process that usually takes days or even months.

The Representation Project did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
