Florida’s Last Democrat Reminds America of DeSantis’ Great Congressional Victory – Without Realizing It

Nikki Fried is not a reader.

On January 3, Fried left office as the last Democrat to be elected to statehood in Florida. Not that it was an important job—she was the state commissioner of agriculture and public services, which gave me more responsibility than I did in Florida—but not that she was the mastermind behind the whole scheme of things.

She hoped to be, mind you, given that she was one of the Democratic nominees for governor. I’m not entirely sure if it was one of God’s little graces that she lost to former Gov. Charlie Crist, who was then beaten by incumbent Gov. Ron DeSantis in much the same matter that Georgia defeated Texas Christian University in the NCAA college. Football championship on Monday.

However, the fact that Freed is currently unemployed, at least at the electoral level, doesn’t mean she can’t chide the guy whose job she coveted.

As you may have heard, the 118th Congress had a bit of a problem picking the next speaker of the House of Representatives. Democrats seemed to find the gloating admirable—an odd reaction given that a group of populist conservatives managed to get the often helpless Kevin McCarthy to lay out the conservative agenda.

Much of the blame was placed on the Freedom House Caucus, a group of conservative members of the lower house who were not enthusiastic about McCarthy or his predecessors. For Freed, these men and women shared some of the blame – for what, it’s not clear, but they were to be blamed.

And do you know who was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus during his time in Congress, according to Fried’s tweet on Monday? Hm? Didja? Nothing but – sigh! — Ron DeSantis!

I blame you, Mr. Governor!

One shows a perspiring Nikki Fried with tousled Joe McCarthy hair speaking to a sympathetic audience: “I have in my hands a list of nine people who were known to C-SPAN observers as members of the Freedom Caucus of the House of Representatives and who, nevertheless, are still being elected and shaping the politics of the nation!”

At least McCarthy managed to get some publicity from this list, as you remember from history class.

However, for Freed, the response on Twitter seemed rather overwhelming: “Yes, and?”

Call me crazy, but I don’t think that was the reaction she was hoping for. The people of Florida think it’s a win — and they should, given what the Freedom House Caucus has achieved.

Alas, this may be the last we hear of Fried, unless she wants to keep losing elections in an increasingly red state.

According to Ballotpedia, Freed’s only statewide victory was a squeaker victory when she managed to defeat Republican Matt Caldwell with less than 7,000 votes out of 8 million cast in 2018, when the wind was on the Democratic side.

Do you want DeSantis to run for president in 2024?

She lost by over 20 points in the primary to Christ, who nearly lost by 20 points in the general election to DeSantis.

By the property of transitivity, it is safe to assume that she somehow managed to do worse than the boy Charlie.

And judging by the fact that she doesn’t know how to play on Twitter, I would say that Freed’s future is more suitable for literally anything but being elected in Florida.

Maybe she can reverse the snowbird and fly to New York to start over – but other than that, she obviously can’t read her state, let alone the room.
