Vancity Visa credit cards calculate carbon footprint with ecolytiq

Vancity has taken another step in its quest to fight climate change. It is the first financial institution in Canada to offer its members a way to estimate the CO2 emissions associated with their purchases.

Every Vancity Visa credit card holder can track the estimated carbon emissions of credit card purchases with the credit union’s new carbon meter.. Members can see their monthly tally and compare it to the national average or determine which credit card purchases have the highest environmental cost. The Carbon Meter will help Vancity cardholders better understand their carbon footprint and provide helpful tips on how to reduce it.

“We are truly proud to be the first to provide this credit card tool to help our members,” said Jonathan Foley, director of external relations for Vancity, who oversees the credit union’s impact and climate change efforts.. “We know that Vancity members are looking for ways to reduce the impact they have on the environment, especially when it comes to emissions that cause climate change.”
“As a member-owned financial cooperative, we believe it’s our job to help, especially when it comes to the decisions people make with their money,” Foley said. “Vancity is a value-based cooperative with many members choosing banking services because of the reputation of the credit union and ongoing environmental work.”

The Carbon Meter provides Visa credit card holders with an estimate of the carbon footprint of their purchases, allowing people to link their daily spending decisions to the changes they want to see in the world. Making the connection between climate and money just got easier for Vancity members, who now have the means to measure carbon emissions.

Vancity has partnered with ecolytiq, one of Europe’s leading climate technology companies, to provide the Visa Carbon Counter in Canada. Ecolytiq is partnering with financial institutions to provide a digital solution that combines climate awareness, education and behavioral incentives to inspire climate change action.

“We couldn’t imagine a better partner than Vancity to launch our product in North America” said Ulrich Pietsch, co-founder and managing director of ecolytiq.. “With the launch of Carbon Counter, Vancity is setting a new standard for green banking in Canada, giving customers exactly what they want, an opportunity for a better future.”
