Florida Panther Spotted Peeking into Home Through Window
A wild Florida panther gave a family residing in the southwest of the state quite a shock when the elusive predator peered into their window over the weekend. News 6 partner WPLG reports that the homeowner had the sense that something was watching her, and when she took a quick glance over, she was met by the panther’s intense stare. Vendela Harold, the homeowner, promptly recorded the feline’s presence in her backyard.
In her words, the panther had a distinct interest in watching a movie with her and her family through the sliding glass door of their Golden Gate Estates home. Nevertheless, Harold quickly noted that the panther did not appear to be cute and cuddly and looked as though it wanted a snack. Although she was inside her home during the event, she admitted that she would have been scared for her life had she been outside.
The family, having moved into the area less than two months ago, sought the opinion of the experts at Florida Gulf Coast University after filming the panther’s behavior. Nora Demers, a biologist, offered some advice should the family encounter the same situation again. She said that the first thing she would do is appreciate the moment as people don’t get many opportunities to see such charismatic animals up close. Demers also added that panthers pose almost no threat to humans, but small animals like the family’s three dogs are at a higher risk of being attacked.
Demers advised the family to keep their pets under control. According to her, pets are considered as prey for the panthers. She added that they should make their surroundings as healthy and safe as possible to ensure the safety of their pets. The good news is that everyone was safe, and the panther even moved to the front yard and nearby areas after a while.
Florida panthers are extremely rare and are mostly seen in southwestern Florida, where there are still an estimated 200 in the wild. The panther sighting created quite the buzz in the area with people expressing envy at the family’s close encounter with such a magnificent creature.
