Father of NYC stabbing accused faces arrest over Instagram post

The father of a Manhattan man accused of being fatally shot in 2020 in Hell’s Kitchen is now facing his own arrest for falsifying witnesses’ social media posts.

Steve Darbasi said he would turn himself in on Monday after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office issued an arrest warrant.

Darbasi, a 43-year-old salesman, insists his son Tammuz, then 21, was acting in self-defense when he was attacked in what he called a gang attack that killed 24-year-old Terrell Wigfall .

He said Tammuz drew a knife to defend himself, while Wigfall — the top scorer on the Broncos Community College basketball team in 2018 — was stabbed in a fight while trying to steal his son’s bag. Tammuz has been charged with first-degree manslaughter and is being held at Rikers Island on $500,000 cash bail.

Video clips posted to the Instagram account in December show witnesses questioning police about the attack and apparently identifying the participants. The posts include images of pigs and rats.

Darbarsi said his son’s lawyer obtained the police video but declined to say who posted it.

The father said the NYPD broke into his West 57th Street apartment before dawn on Wednesday morning, looking for him and injuring his sleeping girlfriend while he was out of town on business. He called the police raid “shocking”.

“The prosecutor will send SWAT to someone’s home to charge them with a felony for posting on Instagram, but will allow career criminals to roam the streets,” he said.

Darbasi started a petition on Change.org to have gang assault legalized as a justification for self-defense.

The NYPD passed the comment to the district attorney’s office, who said they could not confirm whether a warrant had been issued.
