Pedestrian, 66, fatally struck by driver after tripping and falling on Brooklyn street

A 66-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a driver after tripping and falling on a Brooklyn street, police said Sunday.

Jose Hernandez was crossing busy Fourth Ave. mid-block near 59th St. — just down the block from his Sunset Park home — when he tripped about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, cops said.

A pedestrian was struck while crossing at the intersection of 4th Ave. and 59th St. in Brooklyn, Saturday night.

A Nissan Altima driver heading south on Fourth Ave. ran the victim over without stopping, cops said.

Medics rushed Hernandez to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn but he couldn’t be saved, police said.

Police located the 54-year-old driver some time later but he has not yet been charged with a crime. Investigators were still looking into whether he knew he had struck somebody, an NYPD spokesman said.

Hernandez was a friendly presence on his block, always cleaning the sidewalk and offering people a helping hand, according to a neighbor who didn’t give his name.

“It was shocking,” the neighbor said of Hernandez’s death. “He was a fixture. I’ve known him since I was 11.”

The neighbor said that both their fathers came from the same town in the Dominican Republic and that Hernandez was devoted to his romantic partner.

“He worked, always helping his loved one,” he said. “They were together for a real long time. He was always taking her to doctors appointments. Pretty much, he lived for her.”

The neighbor said Hernandez has fallen before and suffered seizures. He also described the block as a dangerous area.

“I think in this area the pedestrian safety is tough,” he said. “I see a lot of speeding.”
