FBI does not ‘foresee’ Trump, committee chairs say Biden classified documents after House intelligence briefing

The FBI did not release classified documents from Trump, Biden and Pence during a briefing by the House Intelligence Committee last week, and lawmakers still don’t know exactly what the documents contained, committee leaders, Representatives Mike Turner and Jim Hymes, said Sunday. .

Turner, Ohio, and Himes, Connecticut appeared together on NBC’s “Meet the Press” where they said there were still unanswered questions regarding classified documents found at the residences of President Biden, former President Donald Trump and former US President. Vice President Mike Pence.

“The FBI won’t show up,” committee chairman Turner said. “They don’t give us information. They claim that this will affect the results of their investigation, which, of course, cannot be, because the people who are the objects of their investigation know what is contained in these documents.

The lawmakers said the committee still does not know the level of secrecy of each document or who had access to it. Despite these drawn-out questions, Turner said the committee is beginning to “come to an understanding.”

“What we know is that it is unbelievable that administration after administration is clearly carelessly and indiscriminately using classified documents,” the congressman said. “And that’s one thing on a bipartisan basis that we have to decide.”

Himes, a senior member of the committee, agreed that both lawmakers were unhappy with the amount of information provided to the committee during the FBI briefing.

“Let’s just say that none of us are satisfied that we have received enough information to fulfill our primary responsibility to ensure the protection of sources and methods, ”Himes said.

While lawmakers said they were still unable to discuss the details of the briefing, Hymes said they were beginning to “get a feel” for the content of the documents and that it was “a very serious issue.”

“It wasn’t something that we can unequivocally say doesn’t matter,” he said.

Asked if the intelligence community had more confidence in Congress, Turner replied that it was “more of a tension between the FBI and Congress” rather than the broader intelligence community.

“I think it will come to a head in the next couple of years,” he said, adding that the FBI is “not special.”

“They have no more privileges than the president,” Turner continued. “AND [the FBI is] continuing to act as if they had some privilege to act without congressional oversight.”
