Erin Brockovich visits East Palestine after toxic train crash: “Everyone, get my ass off!”

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich arrived in East Palestine three weeks after the catastrophic train derailment that devastated a small Ohio community to work with the victims “so they can get justice, know their legal rights, and so we can hold the railroad accountable.”

On Twitter, Brockovich announced her arrival in East Palestine and her plan to hold a meeting at City Hall on Friday, February 24 at 6:00 pm to work with those affected by the disaster. 5,000 residents of a small Ohio community face massive damage after a Norfolk South train carrying toxic chemicals derailed, causing an environmental disaster.

As an environmental activist, Brockovich is best known for her film Erin Brockovich, which chronicles her involvement in a lawsuit against PG&E.

Her visit comes after Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and former President Donald Trump made stops in East Palestine to deal with a train derailment earlier this week. However, Brockovich made it clear that her visit was not political, tweeting, “I don’t care who you voted for when the crisis hits, we’re all Americans, we’re all human.”

Instead of focusing on President Biden’s absence from the crash site, Brockovich spent time talking to locals in eastern Palestine about their concerns about the crash.

In East Palestine, Brockovich tweeted images of herself talking to “wonderful people” and sharing their experiences.

“@keithricheal074 lives 5 blocks from the crash in #EastPalenstine and he says the local police knocked on his door the night of the crash to alert them.” Brockovich tweeted on Thursday. “He says he’s worried about what will happen to his dogs in a few months if they go outside and eat grass.”

Brockovich tweeted last week about the Ohio train derailment, urging the Biden administration to “ACT NOW.”

“The Biden administration needs to get more involved in this #PalestineOhio train derailment now.” Brockovich shared on Monday, Feb. 13.

She also criticized Republican Senator J.D. Vance for his response to the situation: “Put them in charge. Make them responsible.”

Last week, an Ohio senator set fire to Twitter after he tweeted a video of himself scratching the bottom of a local stream bed with a stick, showing “chemicals coming out of the ground.”

“There are dead worms and dead fish everywhere in this water,” Vance said in the video, standing next to Leslie Run Creek in East Palestine, Ohio.

“It’s disgusting,” he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report did not specify the exact cause of the East Palestine, Ohio derailment, but outlined some operational issues.
