Dallas police say man forced officer to fire gun after attacking officer

Dallas police arrested a man accused of crashing into a restaurant Friday night before leaving the scene and then was involved in another incident in which police say he attacked an officer, causing her gun to run out .

We don’t know why the driver of the sedan was reportedly running from people trying to help him.

“They kind of woke him up and he fled the scene and he just fled,” recalled Tommy Nelson, who witnessed the start of the incident.

We don’t know why Ring’s camera footage later shows him twirling on the ground near a stranger’s house.

“He could barely walk,” recalls Taylor Dockry, who witnessed the incident.

And we don’t know what he was thinking when he reportedly ran from Dallas Police Department officers and then ran towards them, grabbed the officer and unloaded the officer’s gun.

It all started when a car crashed into Mayer’s Garden, just off North Henderson Avenue, just before 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“I saw the car just crash right into the edge of the restaurant,” Nelson said.

Nelson said the first rescuers arrived to help the driver, who at first appeared to be unconscious.

And then boom [he was] gone,” Nelson recalled.

Police said driver Roderick Green escaped.

An hour and a half later, about a mile from Buena Vista Street, police reported that Green had tried to break into several houses.

“And this guy is tripping and falling and spinning all over,” Dokri said.

Dokri, her husband and their 4-month-old son live in one of these houses.

“And it was very scary. Then I heard another noise,” she said.

Ring camera footage from another house later shows officers attempting to take Green into custody. They repeatedly asked him to sit down.

“Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. If you don’t sit down, you will be shocked for no reason! Stop,” the officers said.

The female officer showed the stun gun, but Greene still didn’t sit down.

Instead, Dallas police said Green resisted and ran across the street.

The officers used stun guns, but they were ineffective.

Police said Green pursued a female officer and the officer pulled her pistol from its holster.

Green then reportedly grabbed the officer and knocked her to the ground.

According to the police, during the fight, Greene grabbed the officer’s arm and gun, and it went off.

The second officer took control of Green, who was taken into custody.

“It wasn’t very fun. It was definitely unnerving,” Dokry said.

The Dokri family and other residents of the area are relieved that no one was hurt by the gunshot.

“Scary, right? Because I have a child,” she added.

Green was arrested for assaulting a government official, attempting to obtain a law enforcement officer’s weapon, and robbing a building.

As for the original car crash, it’s unclear what charges could be brought.

There were no reports of injuries and witnesses said it was a miracle because people were sitting on the other side of the patio moments before the accident.

“They were actually sitting in those seats that had just been hit by a car and they moved inside because they were too cold,” Nelson said.

The officer was taken to the hospital, provided medical assistance and released.

Green was taken to the hospital for examination and then sent to the Dallas County Jail.
