Dallas-Fort Worth Road Condition Mostly Good After Light Snowfall

Only a few school districts north and west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area will start late Wednesday due to the remaining snow on the roads.

Bowie, Chico, Graham, Montagu, Munster and S&S ISD delayed the start of classes by two hours. Bus routes will also be delayed by two hours.

In Cook County, Gainesville and Sewells Bend ISDs will be closed on Wednesday.

About 2 inches of snow fell, and some of it actually stuck to the ground in areas closer to the Oklahoma border where schools are closed.

The winter mixture turned into a steady snowfall in Gainesville at nightfall and reduced visibility. Some drivers drove into parking lots or gas stations.

“Yeah, it’s just hard to see far, you know, like a long distance,” said one driver.

People passing through the more northerly parts of Collin and Denton counties also had to hold on tightly to the steering wheel as the roads became slippery and dangerous on Tuesday evening.

“It was very slippery. My car was flying all over the place,” said Maribel Villarreal, who was driving on Interstate 35 towards Gainesville.

Visitors to Buc-ee’s along I-35 in northern Fort Worth watched large snowflakes fall after sunset. It quickly turned into a slush that covered parked cars and grass but did not accumulate on the ground.

One person said he was surprised at how quickly the rain turned to snow.

“It was wet and slippery. It took me a while to just get there on the highway,” said Gary Dunkley, who lives in Fort Worth.

But road conditions in much of the Dallas-Fort Worth mega-plex should now be OK for commuters.

Wednesday morning temperatures will be above freezing throughout North Texas. Anything stuck to the ground will soon melt.

“We had snow last night around 35-36 degrees. So it’s snowing. It sticks to the grass. It doesn’t stick to the roads. It’s the best kind of snow,” FOX 4 meteorologist Evan Andrews said. “It’s all in the 30s [now]. Now not only the 30s, but also the mid-30s, so no one freezes. You won’t run into an ice rink on the road. It’s just wet roads.”

North Texas simply didn’t get cold enough for widespread icing like Lubbock, Texas.
