Dallas Animal Services officers battle ice to save freezing puppies

“The dogs are left outside, without shelter and the like,” WFAA officer Andrew Sanchez told WFAA.

DALLAS. Even in the worst weather, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) must be on the move.

“The dogs are left outside, without shelter and the like,” WFAA officer Andrew Sanchez told WFAA.

On Wednesday, the WFAA joined Sanchez and field manager Sandy Castillo as they tended to call about a lack of departure. This week alone, DAS responded to only 206 messages.

Obviously, not every call that employees respond to turns out to be a criminal case.

“She was out for a few minutes to use the potty and someone saw it and called her,” Sanchez said of the first dog he tested.

But in weather like this, every call is hard.

The DAS truck quickly got stuck in the ice. However, Sanchez and Castillo prepared.

They use cat litter as traction under the wheels to get the car started again.

In addition to calls for no help this week, DAS issued 52 violations and confiscated five animals.

“There was a dog in the backyard without proper shelter,” Sanchez said, referring to the dog that was taken away on Tuesday.

“No water. I mean frozen, but you can’t drink it.

Sanchez said his team will always work, rain or shine.

“It’s a little stressful, but we’re doing our best to get through it.”
