Crime rate in Wylie has risen to pre-pandemic levels

Wylie, TX (CBSDFW.COM) – Cities across Texas are returning to more normal lifestyles as people emerge from the coronavirus pandemic. More crime comes with this return, according to the Wylie Police Department.

The department reports that after a three-year decline, the city’s crime rate has returned to pre-COVID-19 levels in 2019. They attribute the 23% increase to a 75% increase in attacks. The department added that most of these calls were related to domestic violence.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing a large spike in calls related to family unrest in the home,” Chief Anthony Henderson said. “The Department continues to focus resources on victims of domestic and domestic violence and the prevention of this unforgivable crime.”

Wylie also saw a 19% increase in traffic accidents compared to 2021 figures.

“Not only is Wylie up 3% over the past year, but cities around us, especially in the north, are booming with more traffic through Wylie,” Henderson said. “We are also seeing more cars and trucks on the roads following the decline in traffic during COVID.”

In a press release, the agency said they “are well aware that statistics do not make sense for those who have had the misfortune of being the victim of a crime.”
