Crews fight grass fire in Collins County

Crews attempt to control a grass fire in the town of Lavon.

The fire broke out around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in a field behind houses near Highway 78 and CR 2755.

Video from SKY 4 shows firefighters fighting the blaze with water carriers.

It is not yet clear how much land was burned as a result of the fire and how much of it is localized.

Wildfire risk is now higher in North Texas due to recent dry conditions.

FOX 4 meteorologist Kylie Capps said despite cooler temperatures on Thursday, the risk will remain high until decent rain falls in the area.

Drought conditions cover nearly all of North Texas, with areas in the south and southwest being the worst, according to the latest drought monitoring report.

“Yesterday we saw our winds change from the west, and because of that, a very high fire risk a little closer to I-35W and certainly yesterday in our western counties,” Capps said. “Today we are still dealing with a small breeze.”

Lavon is located in Collin County, east of Plano.
