CPAC Straw Poll: Donald Trump 62, Ron DeSantis 22, all others in single digits

Former President Donald Trump easily won the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll for the 2024 Republican Party presidential nominee on Saturday.

Trump received 62 percent support in a poll of more than 2,000 CPAC members, placing him 40 points higher than the runner-up candidate.

The results of the CPAC straw poll were announced Saturday, just before Trump took the stage to address the conservative Gaylord crowd in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (right) came in second with 20 percent support in the preliminary poll. While he has not officially announced his candidacy for president, many political pundits expect DeSantis to announce his candidacy in late spring or early summer at the end of the current Florida legislative session.

Trump’s victory in Saturday’s preliminary poll came after he handily won the polls at both CPAC events in Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas last year.

Michigan businessman Perry Johnson, who was running for governor of his state, came in third with 5 percent support.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, the only two declared candidates featured in the poll, received three and one percent support, respectively.

Other names in the poll included Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who all received one percent support.

Joseph Belnom, a 47-year-old New Jersey resident who attended CPAC, told reporters. New York Post he cast his straw ballot for the former president because Trump “knows what he’s doing and when he gets there, he doesn’t have to take on-the-job training.”

“DeSantis is a good governor. I think he can be a good future president… I don’t think his time has come yet. I think Trump should finish what he started there,” Belnomé added.

In a preliminary poll of the vice presidential nominee, former Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake received the most support with 20 percent, while DeSantis came in second with 14 percent.
