The Joint Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado, and NOAA’s Office of Education (OEd) are looking for a qualified software and 3D visualization developer to participate in the NOAA Science On a Sphere® (SOS) program (SOS Program) ). develops ground-breaking data visualization technologies from mobile applications to large-scale exhibitions that provide real-time and other current Earth and space data Games, simulations and the cloud are experiencing a period of rapid growth, and the SOS program is committed to staying at the forefront of technology trends. and provide an engaging and educational presentation of NOAA content that is accessible, scientifically sound, and culturally relevant. The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is an internationally recognized leader in innovative environmental sciences and research and is a research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Education and Outreach program at CIRES is an intermediary that helps make innovative research accessible to students, educators and the public. Some of the important topics we work on are climate change, water resources, forest health, pollution, our dynamic oceans, atmospheric chemistry, and the special environments of the Arctic and Antarctic. NOAA Office of Education Science On a Sphere Team

The SOS team is made up of a small group of dedicated software engineers, educators and scientists who work together to create innovative data visualizations and educational tools that enable everyone to understand our interconnected world and inspire meaningful change. The SOS program includes three technologies. SOS is a room-sized global display system that projects visualizations of planetary data onto a six-foot-diameter sphere to help people of all ages demonstrate earth system science. It is installed in almost 200 venues around the world and is viewed by about 67 million people every year. The flat screen version, SOS Explorer®, is popular in schools, and the SOS Explorer Mobile app has been downloaded over 50,000 times and has thousands of unique users per month. What will be your main responsibilities

  • Create interactive 3D applications that include models, media and graphic design elements, and code skeletons for working with rendering engines.
  • Support NOAA’s SOS Explorer powered by Unity, including design, development, and technical support, and stay up to date on new developments in 3D technology.
  • Work with other team members to develop immersive applications using technologies currently available or expected in the near future.
  • Identify technical problem areas, analyze and evaluate options, and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Test and document the features, performance, and reliability of applications.

What you should know

  • This position will be part of CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically located at the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.
  • Given the building access and security restrictions required for this position, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) are eligible for employment.
  • The selected finalist will be required to pass a federal background check due to the requirement that the position must have access to federal resources.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder staff are required to comply with campus COVID-19 vaccination requirements. New employees must provide a certificate of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.
  • The estimated start date for this assignment is May 1, 2023.

  • The team may offer a hybrid or fully remote form of work for this role.
  • The annual salary range for this position is between $55,000 and $100,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined based on the CIRES internal career classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position in accordance with CIRES and the University of Colorado Boulder Relocation Reimbursement Rules and Regulations.

What do we need

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physical sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years experience in software development.

What will you need

  • A solid foundation for object-oriented design, debugging, benchmarking, testing, code management, containerization, continuous integration, and documentation.
  • Experience in C# programming for large software projects.
  • Experience in programming with the Unity game development engine.
  • Participation in the creation of augmented reality or virtual reality (XR) applications.
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms and performance.
  • Understanding the basic concepts of the 3D rendering pipeline.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and logical thinking ability.
  • A team-oriented and collaborative approach and a passion for the program’s educational mission.
  • Desire and ability to work in a friendly and supportive team.
