Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD discusses fentanyl with families

Parents from the Carrollton Farmer’s Branch School District want to know how administrators are dealing with a dangerous drug that recently led to student overdoses and deaths. Federal investigators said the students were victims of fentanyl drug trafficking.

At one point, the Monday night meeting got heated as parents continued to show their frustration over the nine cases of drug overdoses by students since September. Three of them died.

State legislation passed in the 2023 session will legalize fentanyl test strips.

About 50 people came to the meeting, which took place in the administration building. One was in English, the other in Spanish.

A local activist expressed concern over the county’s response to a string of student overdoses on fentanyl pills.

A 22-year-old man believed to be the “primary source” of the fentanyl that killed three Carrollton teens has been arrested, the feds said.

The school administration has informed parents that Narcan is available on all campuses. School nurses and school resource workers may administer it to help manage the effects of an overdose.

The district has also begun selective dog searches on secondary campuses.

“I feel that the more public organizations will be involved and more present in the lives of our children, the more attention will be paid to our children, more activities for our children. If they are kept busy in a positive way, it will really help improve their lives and our future.” said April Hooper Christensen, parent.

The list of student overdoses since September includes teenagers as young as 13.
