KHOU 11 celebrates Black History Month by highlighting black-owned businesses.

HOUSTON – KHOU 11 is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting black-owned businesses in the Houston area.

Almost 23% of African Americans make up the population of Houston, so black culture is firmly rooted in our city. That’s why it’s no wonder you can find black-owned businesses just about anywhere in the Houston area, including downtown, the museum district, and the many black communities that make Houston Houston.

BLK Market

Location: 11200 Broadway St., Suite #940, Pearland

Details: BLCK Market opened its retail outlet in September 2021 in downtown Pearland after creating a space for more than 50 black-owned businesses to advertise and sell their products. There are brands on the market that are unique and cannot be found in your traditional retail store.

“How we launched the BLCK market, I actually started with seven vendors in the hallway of my movie studio. Suppliers who have not received the same quality standard when it comes to marketplaces have taken that level of standard and excellence and applied it to the BLCK market,” said founder Joe Malone.

Lamic Beauty

Location: 720 Rusk St., Houston

Details: LAMIK Beauty is a vegan beauty line made with safe, natural and organic ingredients. Its mission is to provide all women with pure beauty products and services.

“LAMIK is an acronym that means “love and make-up in kindness”. Love and kindness is your true makeup because beauty is revealed, not applied,” said founder and CEO Kim Roxy.

Critter Care Animal Hospital

Location: 13040 Dairy Ashford Rd, Sugar Land

Details: Critter Care Animal Hospital is a full-service small animal veterinary hospital run by two Black Houston veterinarians, Dr. Amna Plummer (owner) and Dr. Keidra Karmen, who joined the staff in 2010.

“We do what few veterinarians do in the Houston area, which is acupuncture, ozone therapy. We have care here, we have a boarding house, so we do it all,” Dr. Plummer said.

Vegan pizza Mika

Location: Inside Blodgett Food Hall, 2616 Blodgett St., Houston.

Details: Meek’s Vegan Pizza said it’s serving pizza for pizza lovers who refuse to compromise on taste and health. The pizzeria prepares its own homemade dough and cheese, as well as award-winning stuffed peppers.

“I decided to open Meek’s Vegan Pizza because I felt that people needed a plant-based alternative to what they have loved and enjoyed all their lives, but they needed something that was not only good for themselves, but for environment. good for our fellow humans on Earth,” said Demetrius Walker, owner and founder.

Medium Green Workout

Places: 6400 Southwest Freeway and 15299 Lee Road.

Details: Mean Green Training is a fitness center that offers everything from strength training to HIIT workouts and fitness. The gym has a unique “Core 4” system that is said to be a game changer for those looking to get in shape.

“That’s why at Mean Green we do group workouts, but we still have the feeling of a one-on-one workout. In particular, we want people to feel good and look good,” said owner Chris Green.

Mo Better Beer

Location: 1201 Southmore Boulevard, Houston.

Details: Mo Better Brews is a 100% vegan restaurant from food to drink. The restaurant serves everything from Buffalo Chik’n Dip sauce, almond butter croissants, Boudain balls, pancakes, waffles and cereal.

“There was nowhere to get a vegan breakfast. We could wait until brunch and you could find some options here or there, but there was no place dedicated to vegan breakfast, so we decided to solve this problem,” said Chef Courtney Lindsey.
