Ask Soldier Steve: What does it take to get a Veterans Disability Number?

ORLANDO, Florida. – News 6 traffic safety expert Steve Montiero answers viewers’ questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers through better education.

Soldier Steve was asked, “What do I need to bring to the DMV to get a disabled veteran’s license plate, and is there a charge for that?”

He said that when it comes to disabled signs, there are permanent and temporary.

“The permanent disability label does not require an additional fee. However, a temporary one costs $15. Any person applying for a new permit or renewing or replacing their disabled parking permit must submit form HSMV 83146,” Soldier Steve said.

Drivers must also provide a certifying medical authority.

“This will include something from a doctor or a similarly licensed doctor from another state if the application is accompanied by documentation,” he said.
