After Nearly Two Decades, San Diego’s Cupcakes Squared Announces Impending Closure

“With much gratitude and a full pantry of emotions, I am announcing the closing of Cupcakes Squared storefront in Point Loma,” wrote owner Robin Ross in an announcement posted on social media. “Our last day open will be 1/14, come by and say hi, we would love to see you. It’s been such a pleasure being a part of your friends and family celebrations over the last 15 years. Our little store will remain a bakery, Prickle Bakeshop will bring a delightful array of delicious baked goods, plant based and regular,  please check her out at Prickle Bakeshop  and Acai Carioca will remain at the shop as well.” 

One of San Diego’s first fully-dedicated cupcake bakeries, Cupcakes Squared was founded in Point Loma in early 2008 by longtime graphic designer Robin Ross, who catered her way through school while at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Ross also spent years as a personal chef before launching her square cupcake cafe. Over its 15 year tenure, Cupcakes Squared offered a menu of delicious, seasonally-inspired square cupcakes made with natural ingredients. 

Cupcakes Squared will close after end of business on Saturday, January 14. The 800 square-foot space will then be taken over by Blair Braz for the opening of a new dessert bakery concept dubbed Prickle Bakeshop. Prickle will sell a variety of cakes, cookies, cupcakes and sweets, including vegan and gluten free varieties, as well as host cake and cupcake decorating classes.
