Police say a man filling a gas tank on the side of a highway has died after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Katy’s I-10 freeway.

HOUSTON – A man filling his gas tank on the side of a highway was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver on I-10 Cathy freeway early Saturday morning, police said.

Police said it happened near the Gessner Road exit around 3:45 am.

The accident closed all major lanes of I-10 Katy Freeway near Blalock westbound while authorities investigate the accident.

According to police, the victim ran out of fuel in his car on the highway and asked Uber to take him to the nearest gas station.

When the Uber driver brought him back to his car, the man got out and started refilling his tank. According to police, it was then that a dark-colored Toyota pickup truck ran over the man. He died at the scene.

The Toyota was out of action following the impact and remained at the scene until authorities arrived.

Police said the Toyota driver showed signs of disability and was later taken into custody. Charges against the driver remain pending.

No other injuries were reported.
