After hours NYPD shooting suspect arrested at motel

Police said Tuesday that a man suspected of shooting an NYPD officer on duty during a botched robbery was arrested two days later at a suburban motel.

Authorities believe Randy Jones, 38, shot and killed Officer Adid Fayaz, 26, on Saturday after luring him to a location in Brooklyn under the pretext of selling a car through the Facebook Marketplace, detectives chief James Essig said at a press conference.

Fayaz, who officials said was hospitalized in serious condition on Tuesday, agreed to meet with Jones on Saturday to buy a car for $24,000, Essig said.

Fayaz arrived with his son-in-law, and Jones “jokingly” asked if the men were armed, Essig said. According to the chief, Jones blocked Fayaz’s head and demanded money.

A suspect in an attempted robbery in which an NYPD officer shot while off duty was arrested at a motel. The duty officer met with the man to potentially buy a car from him on the Facebook marketplace.

Fayaz said he had no money, Essig said, and Jones pointed his gun at Fayaz’s brother-in-law. According to Essig, Fayaz broke free of the head hold and Jones shot him in the head.

According to Essig, Jones ran, firing again at the runner. According to him, the son-in-law grabbed Fayaz’s pistol from his hip and also fired several shots.

According to Essig, Jones drove off in a 2011 BMW registered to his mother.

Jones was arrested Monday at the Days Inn in Nanuet, about 35 miles north of New York. According to Essig, a woman and five children, ranging in age from 6 months to 11 years old, were with him at the motel.

The charges against Jones were heard on Tuesday. There is no information about his lawyer.
