A Dallas resident admitted to shooting a driver who “bumped” into him from behind, police records say.

Dallas police records reveal details of a weekend shooting in the Oak Lawn area that left a man in the hospital.

Part of the incident was caught on the doorbell camera. The suspect confessed and told police that he feared for his life, investigators said.

According to the detention protocol, the victim was shot four times. The alleged shooter told police that he believed the man who crashed into him from behind also had a gun and was about to confront him, but police say they did not find a gun in the victim’s car.

Dallas police say Warner Portis admitted to shooting a man early Sunday morning who he said “back-slammed” his 2017 Audi A4 on Congress Avenue in the Oak Lawn neighborhood of Dallas.

Portis is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In CCTV footage, he can be heard screaming moments after the shooting.

The screams sound like Portis knew the man he shot, but the Dallas police claim otherwise.

“I just want to reiterate that the victim and the suspect did not know each other prior to this incident,” explained Dallas Police Officer Brian Martinez.

According to the arrest warrant, Portis says the victim hit him from behind and got out of his 2016 Toyota Corolla. Portis believed the man “had a firearm”.

Portis told police that he feared for his life, so he fired his gun about 13 times. It’s unclear if the victim actually got out of his Toyota, but police say they never found a gun in the victim’s car.

Investigators’ initial reports say the victim swerved his car just as Portis started firing and crashed into a pole.

Neighbors told FOX 4 that they continued to hear gunshots after the accident.

FOX 4 filmed a video showing bullet holes in the hood and windshield of the victim’s Toyota. He was shot four times: a bruised wound on the side of the head, a bullet wound below the neck, and two bullet wounds to the chest.

“This victim was taken to a local hospital and he remains in a stable condition, which is great,” Martinez said.

Portis was waiting for the police to arrive. According to the affidavit, he raised his hands and said that his gun was on the hood of his car. Officers searched his Audi and also found an extended magazine and a regular size magazine.

According to an affidavit, Portis told police he was involved in a similar incident a few years ago and someone shot him. He says Sunday’s crash has rekindled that fear. Police say the shooting is an example of how to remain calm when involved in an accident.

“Emotions are running high and so we definitely want to remind everyone that when this happens, give us a call,” Martinez said.

Portis was released from prison on Sunday evening the same day he was arrested. His bail was $50,000.
