1 killed, 3 hospitalized after drive-by shooting in Homestead; Possible connection of the FHP probe with SR 826 shots

Homestead, Florida. (WSVN) — The Homestead area has been rocked by shootings that have killed one person and sent three others to the hospital as police investigate a possible link between the shooting and another incident on the Palmetto Expressway.

Homestead Police, Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue responded to the scene of the shooting from the drive-by intersection of Southwest Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue around 3:50 p.m. Sunday.

The 61-year-old resident, who asked not to be named or show his face on camera, described the chaotic scene.

“I got out and saw the police coming from every corner, blocking the streets, so I knew something terrible had happened,” he said.

Surveillance video captured several shots followed by a car screeching.

“Shots are heard all the time, but this scale has never happened before,” a local resident said.

MDPD detectives said three men and a woman were leaving the house when they came under fire.

“A car drove up to an apartment building and was fired from,” MDPD Detective Angel Rodriguez said.

By the time paramedics arrived, one of the men was dead.

Paramedics took the survivors to Jackson South Medical Center, where they are said to be in stable condition.

7News cameras captured at least four bullet holes in a silver Volkswagen sedan, multiple evidence markers and bloodied concrete.

“I saw the guy standing at the door. The police tried to resuscitate him, and he was lying there, just lying,” he said, “and people were pulled out of the car, and one was airlifted, and the others were put in an ambulance van.”

Meanwhile, Florida Highway Patrol investigators are working on a shooting that they say could be linked to the Palmetto Expressway in southwest Miami-Dade.

Soldiers said that while the Rangers were loading a stalled Nissan Altima near Southwest 40th Street, someone in a blue Chevy Malibu stopped and started shooting.

The Nissan was hit but no one was hurt, investigators said.

As for the drive-by shooting in Homestead, neighbors are hoping something will change.

“A meaningless life that was taken away, you know, and life is in abundance,” said an unknown resident. “We need to be more mindful of this, but until people come together, this is what it all boils down to.”
