Winter ice storm leaves dangerous road conditions but great sledding conditions

Traffic on Interstate 35E in Denton was light and slow on Tuesday. after a winter storm dumped centimeters of ice and sleet.

“Everybody gets a snowy day,” truck driver Carlo DeRosa said. “Or an ice day in that case.”

DeRosa photographed the courthouse area in Denton.

“I have to drive down the road in my semi-trailer heading to North Carolina,” DeRosa said. “But because of your wonderful weather, I’m stuck here for a few more days!”

On I-35W North Tuesday morning, another driver of a large drilling rig blocked all lanes.

“Just half a second,” DeRosa said, explaining the dangers of driving in icy conditions. “One second you’re on the road, and the next you’re on top hanging from your seatbelt!”

“It’s a little crazy here,” said Kieran O’Conner, returning home after shopping for food at Buc-ee’s. “I hope everyone is safe, but if they are on the roads, I mean more power for them, but not for me!”

In McKenna Park, children who were out of school because of “wet rain” sledding down the hills.

“We love to go out and play in it,” said Melissa Haas. Haas brought her sons to sled with friends. “It rejuvenates my heart and gives me a ‘return to childhood’. I love to just play and enjoy it with my kids.”

AND Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of North Texas until 6 a.m. Thursday; en Ice Storm Warning effective for parts of North Texas, including Denton County, at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.
