Where to Celebrate MLK Day in Dallas-Fort Worth

The cities of North Texas will once again commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 40 years have passed since the adoption of the law, Martin Luther King Jr Day federal holiday.

This year, MLK Day falls on Monday, January 16, 2023. The holiday always falls on his birthday, which falls on January 15, 1929, and since it’s actually considered “working” and not “holiday”, you might be looking for ways to celebrate, educate, or maybe volunteer in the community.

Here is a list of events and activities taking place in Dallas, Fort Worth:

IRVING

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORY EVENTS

Friday, January 13 at 9:00 City of Irving Cutting the ribbon of the royal square. Pocket Park was built to honor the legacy of the civil rights leader.

Saturday, January 14, from 14:00 to 3:30. NAACP program and lunch | Georgia Farrow Recreation Center

Sunday, January 15 at 18:00 at the Irving Arts Center; The program includes performances by the Dallas Black Dance Theater and vocalist Kamiki King. Irving students who took on the challenge of writing about King’s legacy will read their winning essays.


ARLINGTON

BLACK MUSIC AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT CONCERT

Sunday, January 15, 7:30 am Evenings at the Meyerson Symphony Center 40th Annual Concert, conceived and created by Curtis King, founder and president of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, is a tribute to MLK and the civil rights struggle of the 1960s. Musical performers Leandria Johnson and Avery Wilson will join the 200-piece TBAAL concert band for an evening of music, dance and spoken word.


MESKITE

FREE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE AND HOLIDAY

City of Mesquite and the Mesquite NAACP is a two-part celebration.

Saturday, January 14 at 10 am Community March (The route will start at Mesquite High School on Belt Line Road and East Gross Street and continue through downtown. View full route map)

Saturday, January 14, 13:00.The program at the Mesquite Center for the Arts will showcase student dance, music, and oral performances, and will include notes from community leaders.


LANCASTER

FREE MLK DAY PARADE

Saturday, January 14, 11:00 in lancaster square– Bands, dance and drill squads, car clubs and other community groups will take part in the annual parade, which runs from Lancaster Historic Town Square (250. N. Dallas Ave) to Lancaster High School. After the parade, the student group will perform in the school gym.


DESOTO

Friday, January 13, from 19:00 to 22:00. at DeSoto High School MLK Performing Arts Show The Dallas Black Dance Theater headlined an evening of dance and music. DeSoto The school choir opens the show.


GRAND PRAIRIE

FREE PARADE & MLK HOLIDAY

January 16 from 9:00 to 13:00 at Grande Prairie City Hall After the opening ceremony in front of Grande Prairie City Hall, a parade of community groups, students and officials will march down Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and culminate at David Daniels Elementary School. Thereafter, the program at the Dulworth Recreation Center will include performances by students and guest speakers.

Guests receive free hot dogs and T-shirt giveaways while supplies last.
