WH Spox asked if Biden regrets not “coming up” on his classified documents after Pence was exposed

The White House is facing questions about whether President Joe Biden now regrets that he has not been more outspoken about his handling of classified documents.

After former Vice President Mike Pence was exposed as having discovered classified documents in his Indiana home, NBC News’s Kristen Welker wondered if the president regrets going about his own business.

“When he saw how outspoken former Vice President Mike Pence was… about the secret documents being found in his home in Indiana, didn’t the President regret not having made it known to the public right away and instead let it leak to the press? » she asked.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded by pointing to a lawyer-published chronology of the discovery of classified documents in Biden’s home and private office at the Pennsylvania Biden Center.

“And I’m just not going to go beyond what he said, I’m not going to go beyond what his lawyers said,” she added.

She also declined to comment on whether Biden thinks he should consider procedures for handling classified documents.

On January 9, it was reported that the U.S. Attorney was reviewing about 10 classified documents from Biden’s time as vice president, found at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, DC.

These documents were discovered in November before the midterm elections, but their discovery was not made public until two months later.

Another batch of documents was found in the garage of the president’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. These documents were discovered on December 20, 2022.

On January 14, White House attorney Richard Sauber reported that six classified documents were found in the president’s personal library at his home in Wilmington. And on Friday, FBI investigators raided the president’s home and found even more classified documents, including from his time as a senator.

Biden and former President Donald Trump will face a special counsel investigation into their handling of classified documents.

And the list of high-ranking officials who have taken secret documents to their homes has expanded after Pence said documents with secret markings were found at his home in Indiana.

Biden commented a little on his handling of classified documents. Earlier this month, he told reporters he was “surprised” that classified documents ended up at the Penn Biden Center.

But on Thursday, he told reporters he “doesn’t regret” the discovery of the documents being made public.
