Weather in Dallas: North Texas shoppers flock to stores for heaters and firewood as freezing weather approaches

North Texas shoppers have flooded hardware stores and garden centers this week to fight freezing weather in the Metroplex.

“Today was a little hectic. We were selling a bunch of defrosters, ice melters, pipe wrappers,” said Elliott’s Hardware’s Clay Hunt.

The store says people are buying seasonal tools to prepare for the first winter weather event of 2023, especially electric heaters.

“Every 20 minutes we pull new stock out of the warehouse,” Hunt said.

Not only are heaters flying off the shelves, but firewood is flying off pallets at Walton’s Garden Center.

“That’s all we were selling yesterday, and today it’s mostly firewood,” said Charles Walton.

Some school districts are canceling classes due to North Texas winter weather.

When a cold rain came, the traffic began to slow down, and the temperature was just below zero.

Renee Cummings had to drive from Greenville to Mesquite for a doctor’s appointment on Monday.

“Very icy, very cold,” she said.

Other drivers noticed snow storms on their way.

“I’m going home. I’ve finished. It’s too damp right now,” said Steve Gartside, whose lawn care business was put on hold due to the weather.

The Jersey native has some advice on what we’re all gearing up for.

“If there is ice on the street, you need to slow down and not slow down too much,” he said. “Or just stay off the road because no one can drive on ice.”
