We are moving! Texas ranked #1 for one-way U-Haul trucks (again)

Homemade movers arriving in Texas accounted for nearly 50.3% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of Texas.

TEXAS, USA. No other U.S. state had more one-way U-Haul trucks in 2022 than Texas, according to U-Haul’s recent annual report.

And so for the second year in a row.

In both 2021 and 2022, Texas and Florida were the top two states in these U-Haul statistics. In 2022, South Carolina ranked third and North Carolina ranked fourth.

Texas has become the #1 state for the fifth time since 2016. No. 2 Florida has been one of the top three growing states for seven consecutive years.

“Migration trends in 2022 are very similar to those in 2021, with Texas, Florida, the Carolinas and the Southwest continuing to see robust growth,” said John Taylor, president of U-Haul International.

U-Haul calculates these statistics by looking at the net increase in U-Haul one-way trucks entering the state versus leaving during the calendar year. The data is collected from more than two million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions that occur each year.

Homemade movers arriving in Texas accounted for nearly 50.3% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of Texas.

“People are still flocking to Texas,” said U-Haul Company of Northeast Dallas president Zane Rowland. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex attracts new companies every day. Companies are moving to DFW and Texas because we are a cost effective option.”

For the third year in a row, California ranks last in net growth of one-way U-Haul trucks. Illinois was also second in all three years.

At one point in 2021, U-Haul said it had run out of enough vehicles to meet customer demand for “field equipment”.

“Texas is great because you have a low cost of living, no state income tax, and unregulated energy costs,” said Robert Abidin, president of the U-Haul Company of Northeast Houston. “Texas is also the energy capital of the United States. We are home to all major industries. Everything you look for in Texas, you can find in Texas.”

Top growing cities in Texas include Richardson, Missouri City, and Conroe. Other notable net worth markets include Roanoke, Porter, Farr, College Station Bryan, Cypress, Mesquite, Cathy, Magnolia, Huntsville, Longview, Prosper, North Richland Hills, Baytown and Kingwood.
