Watch: Jean-Pierre was asked if Biden regrets canceling the Keystone XL pipeline

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said whether President Joe Biden regrets revoking approval to build the Keystone XL pipeline.

During a press briefing on Monday, the reporter noted that the Keystone XL pipeline “should have been running today or was very close to launching today.”

“Are there any regrets about canceling this project and any considerations for changing any energy policy for a more balanced approach going forward?” he asked.

Jean-Pierre responded: “The President has made it very clear how he approaches the energy space.”

“He does it responsibly. He does it in a way that pleases the American people. There is nothing new here,” she continued. “At the same time, having one of the most important historical climate changes… investments and policies. It won’t change.”

The swap comes two years after Biden withdrew construction permits for the Keystone XL pipeline.

It is estimated that it would transport about 800,000 barrels of oil daily from Alberta, Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

In 2022, gas prices jumped to an average of $5 a gallon after Russia invaded Ukraine.

As of Monday, the AAA reports that the average price per gallon of gasoline is $3.40, down 60 cents from a year ago.

The White House has previously defended the decision to cancel the pipeline and dismissed the idea that it could help lower higher gas prices.

In 2022, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said she did not believe the pipeline would help lower prices, as she noted that it was “not an oil field.”

“This is a pipeline. In addition, oil continues to flow only through other channels. So it won’t really have anything to do with the current supply imbalance,” she added.
