Want to ride with the famous Fort Worth Herd? they hire

The Herd pays $20 an hour to full-time or part-time drovers to recreate historic cattle drives through barnyards.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Animal and history lovers welcome! A well-known North Texas cattle herd has a job that might be perfect for you.

Fort Worth Herd has open applications for people who are interested in working as a drover.

More than 8 million people visited the Fort Worth stockyards last year, and the twice-daily cattle drive is its main and biggest attraction, with thousands of people lining up along East Age Avenue to view the longhorns walking down the street.

The drovers are responsible for re-creating historic cattle drives through the stockyards of Fort Worth. Employees will also be responsible for interacting with visitors, operating machinery (tractors, trailers, etc.) and caring for horses and cattle.

“This is the most rewarding experience you can imagine because these visitors come from all over the world,” said Kristin Jaworski, Fort Worth Herd trail leader. “It really is a dream job for most of us.”

Created in 1999, the herd has the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive, and is one of Texas’ biggest cultural attractions.

They’ve only hired two full-time mushers for their six-man team in the past decade, so the opportunity doesn’t come along very often.

“This is such a unique and prestigious position,” Jaworski said. “We work outside every day with these beautiful animals and we are their messengers on horseback.”

The herd consists of 17 Texas Longhorns, each representing one decade of Fort Worth’s past, and a diverse team of mushers dressed in authentic 19th century clothing.

Although not required, Herd prefers candidates with responsible experience in riding, handling cattle, and public speaking. They are also looking for drivers who speak Spanish.

“We’re really looking for people who can ride horses and who might be familiar with cattle,” Jaworski said. “We’ll be working on a Texas longhorn in the middle of the street.”

Full-time and part-time drivers will be paid between $16 and $20 an hour and will be eligible for a three-month hiring bonus based on performance. The herd will provide training, clothing, horses and tackle.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Be sure to fill out the application online and send it by e-mail [email protected]. Phone calls and calls are not accepted.
