VIDEO – Teen wins award for saving indifferent colleague: ‘I owe my life to Lillian’
A Bay City, Michigan teenager was tagged Thursday for reacting quickly when someone desperately needed help.
According to WNEM, officials paid tribute to 19-year-old Lillian Flanders, who credits her high school CPR training with helping her know exactly what to do on Dec. 27 at the Doubletree Hotel.
The moment she found her colleague, Rusty Pablow, hunched over at his desk and realized he wasn’t answering, she took action to save his life.
She placed him on the floor, then began CPR, which kept the man stable until an ambulance crew arrived to take over the process.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is described as “a life-saving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest,” the American Heart Association website says.
The procedure is important because “maintaining active blood flow – even partially – increases the chances for successful resuscitation after the arrival of trained medical personnel on site,” the association continued.
In a social media post Thursday, the Bay County Crime Organization praised the young woman, writing: “Great job Lillian Flanders!! You are hero!”
The young rescuer said it had been several years since she completed the training, but she felt relieved when she saw the person in need and added, “I understand.”

Sean McAteer, senior vice president and global head of Doubletree by Hilton, said everyone else is thinking about her actions.
“We are delighted with you, we are delighted with what you have done. We are grateful for your act, and I’m sure Rusty is really grateful,” he commented.
In recognition of her efforts, the girl was presented with awards, a key to the city and gifts.
“I owe my life to Lillian. If not for her and her quick reaction, and the fact that she just jumped up … she saved my life, ”said Pablow.
Social media users also expressed their joy at the result, with one person writing, “What a beautiful sight! So glad to see Rusty is back in good health!”
