Dramatic new dashcam video shows the moment an NJ Transit bus crashed into a truck on a New Jersey freeway in February, injuring more than two dozen passengers on board.

On-board video of the February 14 crash, which happened around 7:30 a.m., shows shattered glass flying all over the place. A Mack truck and a Freightliner as all three were heading north during rush hour, police said at the time.

The bus was traveling at about 68 miles per hour at the time of the crash, blowing out the windshield. Another camera shows the bus pulling into the bus lane behind the cement truck. Then a collision near exit 13 in Elizabeth.

“I put my hands on the seat but it still wasn’t enough, my head was still tilted forward and I cracked my lip and my teeth hurt, my whole mouth hurt and my legs were bruised,” passenger Luisa Robles said. .

She said she was still suffering from whiplash and other injuries and was seeing a physical therapist, but was glad she was alive.

The other passenger seated in front seemed to react before the driver himself, as both ended up getting ready when the bus crashed into the back of a cement truck. NJ Transit said the driver was retrained and received the appropriate disciplinary action, but did not specify what exactly.

Photographs taken later on board show that two dozen of the 32 passengers on board were injured in the collision. The firefighters used the Jaws of Life to open the bus and get to the beaten and bloodied passengers. The bus was an old model and was not equipped with seat belts.

Twenty-five people, including the bus driver, were taken to district hospitals, and four passengers refused medical attention. None were seriously injured, police said, adding that the rest of the passengers were placed on another bus to continue the journey.

State police on Monday told NBC New York that all three drivers received tickets: a cement truck driver, a box truck driver (in front and on the right that veered into a bus lane), and a bus driver for following him too. close at higher speeds.

The bus driver who called 911 said he was cut off so he crashed into another car as the three were traveling north during rush hour.

At least two passengers told NBC New York they are exploring legal options for treating the injuries that still remain from that violent collision.
