Utah snowmobilers build a campfire and snow cave after an overnight winter storm

Two Utah snowmobilers were lucky enough to survive after being caught in an overnight storm in Utah on Wednesday.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, search and rescue teams arrived at the Bear River station area on the Mirror Lake Highway in Summit County in connection with two adult men who were stranded on their snowmobiles.

Public relations officer Felicia Sotelo told FOX that the men drove their snowmobiles into a bowl-shaped depression and were unable to get out.

“[They] essentially found themselves in a quandary,” Sotelo shared, noting that their tracked vehicles were low on fuel.

“They didn’t plan on being out all day,” she continued. “They built a snow cave, they built a fire.”

The men used a SPOT location device, which allowed the men to contact emergency personnel who helped the rescue team find them.

“Obviously nobody wants to spend the night in the snow unexpectedly,” Sotelo said, adding: “But they had at least some backcountry experience and knowledge to take shelter during a storm for the night.”

Despite heavy snow during the night and very steep terrain, emergency personnel were able to find the men in “good condition” a few hours later.

“The rescuers were very happy that they were able to find them as quickly as they were, although it took a while,” Sotelo said.

Officials are urging the public to stay alert and have a plan when rebuilding.

“Tell someone where you are going, bring food and water with you, wear suitable clothing for the weather and, if possible, bring an emergency communication device with you,” the agency said in a Facebook post.
