US sanctions six Chinese firms over spy balloon incident

The US Department of Commerce on Friday announced sanctions against six Chinese aerospace companies over a Chinese spy balloon that the US military shot down over the weekend after it crossed US airspace.

Six companies were blacklisted as exporters because of their ties to the People’s Liberation Army’s aerospace programs, “including airships and hot air balloons and related materials and components,” according to the agency.

” [People’s Republic of China’s] the use of high-altitude balloons violates our sovereignty and threatens US national security,” said Deputy Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Esteves. “Today’s actions make it clear that organizations seeking to harm US national security and sovereignty will be denied access to US technology.”

The move comes after the US military shot down a Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic over the weekend.

The balloon was reportedly used “for reconnaissance and reconnaissance activities” that threaten U.S. national security interests. However, the Chinese claimed that the balloon was being used to monitor the weather and it veered off course due to unforeseen natural causes.

“Today’s action demonstrates our concerted efforts to identify and destroy [People’s Republic of China’s] reconnaissance balloons that violated the airspace of the United States and more than forty countries,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Control Matthew Axelrod.

Six companies were blacklisted: Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology Co., China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 48th Research Institute, Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology Co., Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co., Guangzhou Tian-Hai-Xiang Aviation Technology Co. ., and Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co, reports Bloomberg News.
