TxDOT crews are preparing North Texas roads for this week’s winter mix.

TxDOT teams are busy preparing roads for the winter weather expected this week.

Officials are asking drivers to give crews extra time and space as they do their best to keep our roads as safe as possible.

North Texas drivers are gearing up for a possible winter mix Monday through Wednesday.

CONNECTED: The Winter Storm Watch is released for most of North Texas Monday through Wednesday morning.

Some drivers, such as Sabrina Ridgway, say they will pay special attention to road conditions.

“I’m always ready for it,” Ridgway. “And you have to drive for yourself and other people, because a lot of people don’t take the weather seriously.”

“And it looks like there will be more chances for freezing rain, snow and ice,” said TxDOT’s Tony Hartzel.

TxDOT has stated that it has a treatment advantage.

“We have already prepared the roads. We started on Friday when it was quite warm and sunny,” Hartzel said. “We have treated many bridges and overpasses, but now we are going to treat all the main lanes of our main roads.”

Currently, TxDOT treats the roads with brine, which prevents ice and snow from sticking to the roadway. If we see accumulation, it has additional plans.

“We will use brine, but we can also use a mixture of salt and sand,” Hartzel added.

TxDOT teams in Dallas will rotate crews 24 hours a day, 7 days a week starting Monday at noon. The same goes for Fort Worth.

In some areas, brigades start earlier.

“So it can be very, very challenging,” Hartzel said. “Every bridge can be covered in ice.”

“You don’t have to drive at the speed limit, just drive according to the conditions. Take your time and you’ll get there,” Ridgway said. “Don’t speed and be aware of your surroundings.”

Ridgway added that she likes winter weather as long as she doesn’t have to walk in it.

For now, she feels prepared.

“But this is Texas, so you never know what to expect in Texas,” she added.
