Two sisters escaped from a car that crashed into a lake in western Michigan and then shivered in soaked coats and barefoot for hours before finally finding help, authorities said.

Their 52-year-old father, who was driving the car, was dead when divers found the car Sunday in Macatawa Lake, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The girls, aged 8 and 10, escaped through the back of a car, made it to the shore and spent the night alone for several hours before finding someone nearby at a house in Park Township. In winter, many houses around the lake are empty.
