Two Arlington Lamar High School graduates to battle in Super Bowl LVII

Shane Buchele and Kyron Johnson will meet again on Sunday.

ARLINGTON, Texas. North Texans will be heavily represented in Sunday’s Big Game.

Shane Buchele is a backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Linebacker Kyron Johnson is playing his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“It’s such a blessing. It is absolutely amazing to him that he has reached this level, the absolute level, right?” Stephanie Johnson’s mom told WFAA.

Laban DeLay coached Johnson at Lamar High School in Arlington.

Johnson and Buchele are also former teammates of Lamar.

“He was a sponge. He wanted to know Why. And anytime you can teach Why we do it and Why they play this type of coverage and Why We need you here and that made more sense to him,” DeLay said. “Because he knew the defense and knew all the circuits, I think it really helped him in college and probably helped him right now.”

He was drafted by the Eagles in the sixth round after a college ball game in Kansas.

The rookie has made 16 appearances for Philadelphia this season.

“He said it’s different from college because it’s grown men. Growing up in age,” Johnson said.

“Almost my age,” said Dad Broderick Johnson, laughing.

The Johnsons have said they have personally attended nearly every Eagles game this season. And they could tell that there was something special about this team.

“I told [Stephanie] As long as Jalen Hurts leads the team, we go all the way,” Broderick said.

But first, the Eagles will have to go through Buchele’s team, the Chiefs.

“I fight for both,” DeLay said. “I know this can’t end in a draw, but I want both of my kids to succeed.”

Buchele, the son of former Texas Rangers third baseman Steve Buchele, played college football for Texas and SMU.

“He had a demeanor that put everyone at ease,” DeLay said. “Even if we fell, everyone looked at him and he said we’re fine, we’re going to do it.”

Buchele is one of Patrick Mahomes’ back-ups.

“Name, Steve Buchelle: everyone in Arlington knows because the Texas Rangers. And Shane was of the opinion that he could do anything. He can play baseball. He can play basketball. He was running around the track but decided he was going to play in the NFL,” DeLay said. “He was very determined, he has a great work ethic and look where he is now.”

Super Bowl LVII will start on Sunday at 17:30.
