Transgender Kindergarten Worker Accused of Child Abuse After Witness Says

A Kentucky daycare worker who is male but appears to identify as female has been charged with child sexual abuse.

Maria Childers, 25, will appear in court on March 23, according to WPSD-TV.

Childers was arrested on February 8 and charged with first-degree sexual assault on a victim under the age of 12.

WPSD said the incident occurred in November at the Explore Training Academy in Paducah, where Childers was working at the time, according to police reports.

It wasn’t until February 8 that police received word from the Kentucky Department of Community Services about the abuse complaint filed against Childers. The complaint was anonymous.

WPSD reported that a police statement said that a witness at the kindergarten confirmed the details of the report.

The kindergarten principal served Childers with a written disciplinary notice of his comments, WPSD said, police said.

According to the quote, Childers was questioned by the police and gave conflicting accounts of what happened.

Childers initially denied changing the baby’s diaper until he was shown a statement from the principal saying he did. He denied touching the child inappropriately and making inappropriate comments.

The case sparked outrage on Twitter.
