Three dolphins found dead after they washed ashore in Jersey

Three dolphins died last weekend after being stranded in shallow water off the coast of Jersey, according to reports.

Judging by the footage posted Twitter photographer Matthew Renk. According to NJ.com, a rescue team from the Marine Mammal Center was unable to reach the marine mammals in time.

“We picked them up,” Sheila Dean, director of the Marine Mammal Harvesting Center, told the publication. “They all died on the beach.”

An eyewitness told Asbury Park Press that one of the dolphins was “aggressively trying to get out, back into deeper water” while “the other two were confused”.

The dolphin carcasses, all male, were taken by the center for autopsy to determine the cause of death, ABC 7 reported.

Dean told NJ.com that it’s not uncommon for dolphins to get stranded in the winter, but it’s odd that three of them get lost at the same time.

“I don’t know why they ended up in shallow water,” she said of the dolphins. “They just start thrashing about.”

The trio of dolphins are just the latest group of large marine animals to wash ashore in the tri-state region.

A dead whale was found on a Queens beach last Friday, making it at least the 10th sighting in the New York and New Jersey area since early December. The 25-foot whale, found Friday, was likely hit by a vessel before being washed ashore by the Rockaway, the Atlantic Ocean Conservation Society said.
