A relatively unknown San Francisco-based software company has been named “Best Place to Work in 2023” by Glassdoor, a firm that collects and publishes employee reviews of their employers.

The most loyal employer? Gainsight is a software-as-a-service company headquartered in San Francisco’s financial district. The company received a favorable 4.7-star rating, ranking it above other well-known big companies such as Bain & Company (4.6) and Google (4.6), and a full point higher than Glassdoor’s overall average employer rating of 3.7.

“The company has realized that if we provide our people with balance, opportunities to grow, and platforms to recognize each other, they will reward us by contributing as much as possible to our goals,” a Gainsight spokesperson said. “We believe you can win in business by being human first, and this award is a confirmation of that mission.”

The software company was founded in 2009 and has at least 1,000 employees, many of whom are headquartered in San Francisco. This isn’t the first time Gainsight has been recognized for corporate culture; in 2014, it was named one of the “Best Places to Work” by the San Francisco Business Times.

“As a person of color, I support many of the programs they promote and are about diversity and inclusion,” Elk Grove-based senior Gainsight manager said in a review provided by Glassdoor. Other employees emphasized the “family” and flexible work culture of the company in their reviews.

The company is led by Nik Mehta, an experienced software general manager. Gainsight credits Mehta, along with Chief Human Resources Officer Carol Mahoney, for cultivating the company’s “human purpose” and initiatives around office culture and employee benefits.

Top employers in the country? They are in the bay

Gainsight isn’t the only Bay Area company with rave reviews: SF Bay Area has 27 different companies on Glassdoor’s Top 100 Places to Work list, ranking first among all metropolitan areas.

Cause? High concentration of technology firms based in the region. In fact, the tech industry had more “best companies” on Glassdoor’s list than any other industry, including a whopping 41 organizations with high employee ratings. By comparison, the second-highest-ranking industry was finance, which included just seven companies.

Tech companies are famous for offering many perks to employees, whether it’s the private Google and Apple buses that shuttle employees to South Bay offices, or the startup world’s infamous kombucha on tap. These perks, plus a solid salary and flexible work schedules, mean that tech workers have historically been among the happiest employees in the business.

Other major Bay Area companies with positive employee ratings include Google (#8) and Adobe (#14). Cisco, Salesforce and Twilio made it into the top 100 companies despite laying off a lot of employees over the past few months.
