DALLAS. A brutal ax murder rocked the small North Texas town of Wylie in 1980.

Candy Montgomery killed Betty Gore by stabbing her 41 times after a confrontation over Montgomery’s months-long affair with Gore’s husband, according to Texas Monthly’s report on Montgomery’s trial.

Now, 42 years later, two new crime series – Hulu’s Candies starring Jessica Biel and HBO Max Love and death with Elizabeth Olsen in the title role – bring the case back to life.

Candies aired during a five-day Hulu event from May 9 to 13. Love and death Premieres April 27 on HBO Max.

Each episode looks back at the heartbreaking story of two church couples enjoying small-town family life until that fateful Friday, June 13, 1980.

Here’s a look at the real crime story Candies And Love and death.

Case

Candy Montgomery was married to Pat Montgomery, a young electrical engineer at Texas Instruments and mother of two. Betty Gore was a high school teacher married to Allan Gore.

According to a 1984 Texas Monthly profile, both Montgomery and the Mountains regularly attended services at Lucas’s First United Methodist Church. It was this that brought Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore closer and eventually led to an affair and murder.

According to Texas Monthly, the romance between Candy Montgomery and Allan Gore began after they clashed while playing on the church volleyball court, causing Candy to target Allan. She pursued Allan Gore for several months before he finally agreed to start an affair. The romance continued until Allan Gore ended it to focus on Betty, who became more concerned about their relationship and their family, Texas magazine reported.

Crime and judgment

Then, on Friday, June 13, 1980, Gore Wylie’s house became the scene of one of the most notorious crimes in Texas.

Betty Gore told Candy Montgomery about this affair, which led to an ax fight. Candy Montgomery won the fight and then reportedly attacked Betty Gore 41 times, killing her.

Eventually Candy Montgomery was arrested and charged with the murder of Betty Gore. Candy Montgomery testified in court that she killed Gore in self-defense, claiming that “after [Betty] and then gaining control of weapons, heavier and larger [Betty] refused to let [Candy] go.”

Meanwhile, the prosecution argued that Candy could have escaped “and not bludgeoned” Betty Gore to death.

On October 30, 1980, a jury of nine women and three men found Candy Montgomery not guilty of the murder of Betty Gore. She was acquitted of the murder charge.

Murders still haunt some North Texas homeowners

Twenty-eight years after Gore was killed, the WFAA returned to Wylie and spoke to several residents about their memories of the heartbreaking story. People in Wylie still talk about What house.
