The proposal could bring commercial flights to McKinney Airport.

McKinney executives are considering a multi-million dollar expansion of McKinney National Airport. The plan may mean that commercial flights will operate in Collin County.

The airport is currently reserved for general aviation services only, such as refueling and flight lessons. But the proposed plan will create an opportunity for commercial exploitation.

The McKinney City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on a plan to call a bond election that will pay for the expansion of the terminal.

The $200 million proposal will include four gates, a new taxiway and other infrastructure to serve airlines.

If approved in the May elections, the expanded terminal will be completed by 2026.

There is no word on which airline will serve the airport.

The Bond Committee said an additional $100 million would be needed to pay for the expansion. Perhaps this will be covered by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.
