Deal said the group would like to turn the Pine Hills neighborhoods along Colonial Avenue into a new shopping and restaurant district.

“We are trying to update and build Colonial to be recognized. There is a lot of real estate that is not being used. It’s underused. The facades of the building need to be updated and improved. We have to be like Orange County in every way,” Diehl said.

An Orange County spokesperson also showed group images of the new signage in the Pine Hills area.

Community members present stated that after the shooting of a young woman, a 9-year-old girl, and an Orlando TV news reporter, they were interested in changing the perception of others about their West Orange County area.

After working for four years as a retail manager at Pine Hills, Felicia Hunter said that large parking lots without proper lighting attract criminal activity. Hunter said she even called the Orlando Public Service Commission herself and got new lighting for the store’s parking lot.

“If you take the time to just find the little things, you can do it yourself instead of always asking the mayor or another county commission to do it,” Hunter said. “Basically, try to bring everyone together and also figure out how important the Pine Hills are to everyone.”

The community group also said it plans to speak with the Orange County Board of Public Schools about grant and scholarship opportunities for Pine Hills students. Residents also expressed a need for additional parenting resources and youth mentoring programs.
