The non-profit has handed out thousands of sheets to help rebuild Fort Myers Beach.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Florida. On Tuesday, the nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission said people needed drywall and mattresses at Fort Myers Beach.

Patrick Lynch, development director and organizer of the giveaway, told Fox 4 that his content is clearly needed by the community.

“You might think that drywall is a simple material that anyone can get anywhere, everyone here needs drywall,” Lynch said.

On Tuesday, Lynch said volunteers had distributed 7,000 sheets of drywall to people living on Fort Myers Beach.

Al DePalo, who has called FMB his home for over 45 years, says at least one of the items will help him with his recovery.

“Drywall is definitely useful, I’m not too sure about mattresses,” DePalo said.

DePalo said that, like many of his neighbors, the interior of his home is in need of a major overhaul.

“Everything inside is gutted, completely, now there is nothing but thorns,” DePalo said.

A necessity and a reality that Lynch said he realized within minutes of arriving.

“Walls are missing, roofs are down, trash is all around us, and it’s been almost half a year since the hurricane and it won’t be over soon,” Lynch said.

On Tuesday, Lynch said the donations were partly raised by Southeast Florida-based Rotary International, an organization that manages hurricanes along its coast.

“When my county was hit by Dorian a few years ago, the Bahamas were wiped out, they had a big time for us,” said Michael Kestie, Governor of Rotary District 6990.

So this time around, volunteers were helping families like the DePalos rebuild their home on the Gulf Coast piece by piece.

“I know that all the people who have been sitting in this line for 2 hours will be grateful when they get to their house and realize what they just got,” DePalo said.
