The new CapMetro train station at Q2 stadium is almost complete

The new railway station at the Q2 stadium is about half done. Once completed, the new station will make life on the red line much easier for both Austin Football Club fans and commuters, CapMetro said.

“It’s a big deal,” said King Kaul, director of capital projects at CapMetro.

CapMetro says the accelerated McKalla Station project currently under construction next to Q2 Stadium is currently on time and on budget.

“This facility will be used not only for the Q2 stadium, but also for residential, commercial and sports facilities,” Kaul said.

The project includes three elements: the station itself, as well as on-site storm sewers and a double-track line on the red line between US-183 and Gracie Farms.

CapMetro says the McKalla station will be entirely dedicated to capacity. There will be three separate platforms connected by a walkway.

“After the game, I’ll be able to set up trains so no one has to wait while they practice to get down and pick them up,” said Muriel Friday, CapMetro’s acting vice president of rail operations.

But along with this new capability comes safety considerations, such as fencing between the tracks to keep people from crossing the tracks, and gates along the platforms to keep people from falling on the tracks.

The project also includes new “quiet zones” at four railroad crossings next to the stadium, where security measures allow conductors to remove their horns.

“It gives everyone comfort and peace of mind when they sleep at night. Therefore, we will not hear loud noise and beeps day and night,” Friday said.

The entire project is expected to cost $58.8 million, including $25 million for the station itself. This is planned to be done in December of this year, just in time for the 2024 season at Austin.

“Oh, that will be great. It will be just great,” Friday said.

The first game of the 2023 Austin season is this Saturday. To do this, fans can get off the red line at the nearest Kramer station. Additional trains will run as well as shuttle buses from Cramer to the Q2 stadium.
