The reports did not indicate the nature of the emergency.

“It is with deep sadness that we report the sudden loss of a family member, Stephen J. Lim, Special Victims Bureau Detective and 26-year LASD veteran. Today he was in a fatal traffic accident while driving home from work. He was an exemplary detective who handled the most serious child abuse cases,” Sheriff Robert Luna said in a Twitter post as well as on the department’s Facebook page.

“Detective Lim left behind a wife and five children, as well as parents and a sister. We at @LASDHQ will always be there for his family.”

Lim’s death shocked law enforcement.

In a statement on his website, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said, “Detective Lim’s service to protect the most vulnerable in society will always be remembered as nothing less than valor.”

Several police agencies and related groups posted their condolences on social media.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family of LASD Deputy Steven Lim at this difficult time. We will forever hold them in our thoughts and hearts,” the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Facebook page said in a post.
